Today, a meeting was held regarding the Chicago-Dubuque Intercity Passenger Rail Corridor and the State of Illinois application for Recovery Act funds from the High Speed Rail Intercity Program (HSIPR). Main Street downtown).  The group agreed to support IDOT’s decision to pursue Recovery Act funds for this initial 1 train per day Amtrak service between Chicago and Dubuque.  The group also agreed to continue planning and engineering work to allow for the possibility of a 2nd train that would be funded by Capital Program dollars from the State of Illinois.  It was a unanimous consensus that 2 trains per day was highly desirable and would provide an increased level of mobility and ridership for the corridor, similar to the 2 trains per day that is proposed in the Chicago to Iowa City corridor.  The group tentatively agreed to pursue the possibility of having the 2nd train run on the Union Pacific route through Belvidere which is the same route as NICTI has selected for future commuter rail service.

Today I attended a luncheon at the City Club in Chicago sponsored by the “Sandhouse Gang”, a discussion group that focuses on all things rail. This group is operated out of the Transportation Center at Northwestern University. Subsequent to this luncheon, Ray followed up with me via e-mail clarifying some of Amtrak’s positions in relation to their new business model and how passenger trains in the U.S. fit into this plan. I fully intend to continue this dialogue with Ray in the future as it relates to passenger rail in the Rockford region.
